I bought this Portable Workbench many years ago. It was second hand and a cheap copy of a Black and Decker Workmate and I have used it to make and build many items. For a long time it was all I had to work with including a small bag of tools.

It’s about time I fixed it up as it is really handy for working inside the Big House as I work on the renovation.

I created a new Top from Phenolic Resin Plywood left over from a previous project and made it slightly larger than the original Top and included more Dog Holes.

I used the original Top (made from MDF) as a reference for drilling. I am happy with the final result and it will be as helpful as it ever was.

I like the idea of making my own Tools, especially if it is a Tool that is not easily found or readily available. Handmade Tools give great satisfaction and for me it is fun knowing that I created something to help me better improve my woodworking experience.

  1. Thanks mate! You've made me feel really guilty now. I've been meaning to treat my 35 year old B&D Workmate to a new top for years. I'll have to do it now (he he). Nice job and it looks like it is even more versatile than before.

  2. The larger top looks much better!

    Nice work!

I have lost all of the dogs for mine…
