If you're going to soak scales in oil- before you put them on the knife I mean- like some ppl are talking about in the comment section- you need to make sure you remove all oil from the surface of both the scales and the knife tang before gluing. I use acetone or lacquer thinner to do it- works well. I have to go over really oily wood like Cocobolo three or four times to get all the oil off the surface- it wicks out on the first couple goes. But if you don't get it off you won't get a good, solid bond. I won't even touch the tang with my fingers after removing the oil- because your skin has oil on it- I wear surgical gloves. Sounds anal I know but- you get the best bond possible that way.
